What does it mean to "Sponsor" a child?

The Foundation's sponsorship system creates a bond between a Child from the impoverished village of Villa Caoba, with a person of "First World", who wishes to collaborate.

This program offers a benefit to both. The child benefits from the new resources provided by the sponsor, and on the emotional aspects, knowing that they have a "godparent" who can provide attention and affection.

Committing a random act of kindness is a demonstration of the generosity of your spirit, improves your mood and relieves your soul. The sponsor benefits from that emotional part, too, knowing that there is a little person that has a special affection for him or her.

How does sponsorship benefit a child?

Sponsorship benefits the child in 4 aspects:

  • Schooling: Ensuring the formal education of a child, in a quality setting (see "What does it mean to enroll a child in school?" For details).
  • Complete meals: These children do not have access to a well balanced meal, have poor eating habits and are only able to consume small portions. The sponsorship ensures a minimum number of well balanced meals for these children.
  • School Review: On the weekends, the children review of the week’s schoolwork, focusing on literacy.
  • Leisure Activities: Weekends also provide the children with time to enjoy arts and crafts activities.

Can I visit the Child?

Yes, you can visit the children, spend some time with them, go for a walk, and share an ice cream, enhancing the bonding experience between the sponsor and the child. Note that all travel and expenses are to be paid by the sponsor, since all income of the Foundation is intended to improve the situation of children and not to subsidize costs of the Sponsor.

What does it mean to enroll a child in school?

Many of the children that live in Villa Caoba do not go to school. These children spend their days playing, helping around the home or out on the street. Although primary school in the Dominican Republic is free, and there is a public school in the district, there are minimum requirements to go to school. These requirements are to have a minimum of school supplies (pens, notebooks, erasers, pencils, rulers), textbooks, a backpack to carry them and the school uniform.

The school uniform in this country is considered to be of much importance, both by the school (they do not allow children to go to school without it), and by the people, to whom the fact of wearing it fills them with pride (because it shows that the child is going to school in "comparison" to others who do not).

The uniform can be criticized, but it is a reality that exists and without that uniform and without those school supplies, the child cannot go to school.

All this means that a child going to school for a full year depends only on a few Pesos that, in many cases, cannot be paid.
